Joan Masterson Memorial
Chapter Education Fund
History.
The fund was suggested in the summer of 2007 as a tribute and lasting memorial to Joan Masterson,
a Metropolitan Region member, a dedicated needle worker, and a great teacher to many within the Mid-Atlantic Region.
Statement of Purpose.
The fund will provide
grants to chapters so they may offer more educational opportunities for their members. The grants will
allow them to defray the costs of teachers, lectures, and classes, etc.
Funding.
A generous anonymous donation made in the summer of 2007 began the funding. Since then
other donations have been forthcoming. The proceeds from the silent and live auctions held at Spring 2008 Region meetings
were designated for the fund. If the amount remaining in the fund decreases to $500, there will be no further grants awarded
until monies are raised to replenish the fund. Future fundraising events will be determined and approved by the Executive
Board. The committee chair will report on the status of the Fund at Region meetings.
Grants.
As long as funds are available, the selecting committee has the discretion to make grants to chapters
meeting the guidelines below. The goals of the selecting committee will be to distribute the grants fairly
among the chapters from which applications are received.
Guidelines
The applying chapter must be in good standing as defined in the Mid-Atlantic Region Bylaws.
All dues paying members of the Mid-Atlantic Region will be allowed to participate in the event if
there is space available. It is not required that they become a plural member of the chapter receiving
the grant.
Any advertising of the event should include the name of the fund.
A chapter cannot be a recipient in two consecutive years.
Since
the Fund is in the memory of a teacher of the needle arts, the funds will be used for the benefit of the
chapter as a whole rather than defraying individual fees.
A fee can be charged only
for expenses beyond those covered by the grant.
If
the event does not take place, the monies must be refunded. The chapter may reapply the following year.
Timeline
Applications will be due November 1. The recipients of the grants will be announced in the January
issue of the MAR newsletter.
The chapter will receive the grant 30 days prior to the
event.
The chapter will submit a written report to the Region Director describing the
use of the grant within 30 days after the event
Selection
Committee and Selection Process
A committee composed of four members
representing a cross section of the region shall be appointed for a two year term by the Region Director. There will be no
limits as to length of time they may serve.
Selection of chapters to be awarded
grants will be determined by consensus agreement of the committee members, and will be based on their thoughtful and objective
review of the applications received.
